Abstract

1,166,862. Web coating apparatus. BRITTAINS Ltd. 16 Jan., 1967 [18 Jan., 1966], No. 2352/66. Heading D1L. A device for applying a coating composition to a moving web 9 carried by a resilient support (roller 10) comprises a supply 5 for coating composition, a first rigid blade 2 located on one side of said supply, a second rigid blade 1 located on the opposite side of said supply and side dams 3 extending between the said blades and is constructed such that in operation the device may be brought into resilient contact with the web to be coated so that the rigid blade and side dams define a totally enclosed coating zone on the web. Adjustable locating and pivoting means (Fig. 7, not shown) may be provided for adjusting the pressures exerted by the first and second rigid blades independently and micrometrically adjustable stops are provided for fixing the pressures exerted by said blades. The edges of blades 1 and 2 are preferably bevelled in the direction of the approach of web 9 and the supply 5 is formed in a block 4 having a slot 6 communicating with the coating chamber. Insulators 8 surround the block 4 and a heating tube 7 surrounds the supply pipe 5. The side dams 3 can be adjustable for different web widths.
