Abstract

[Also in Division G3] A speed-control mechanism for a rotary shaft 6, such as that of a grinding wheel 8, comprises a control 13 for the supply of energy to a motor 5, a fly weight 21 pivotally connected to the shaft and movable by centrifugal force between a retracted position and an extended position, an interconnection 29 between the fly weight and the control, and means, such as a ball 33, attached to the fly weight to abruptly shift its centre of gravity as it is moved outward by centrifugal force. The ball 33 remains at the lower end of a bore 32 until the latter has been swung past a position parallel with the axis of the shaft 6 when the ball travels outwardly to engage a plug at the end of the bore. In a modification, a spring is interposed between the ball and the plug. The control 13 consists of a spring- loaded valve piston 17 downstream of a manually operated throttle valve 12.
