[Also in Group XXIII] Hydraulic damping means incorporated in mechanism for operating the drive-shaft 221 of a tool for dressing a grinding wheel (see Group XXIII) is settable so that the shaft may be driven at either of two speeds. The drive means comprises a spring-pressed plunger 226 which when released moves forward in its housing 223 and acts through rack-and-pinion gearing 227 on the shaft 221. The housing is filled with hydraulic fluid which upon actuation of the plunger is forced from the end 234 of the housing through ducts 236, 237, 238 to the opposite end of the housing where it enters a passage in a screw plug 239 and thence an annular groove 241 in a rotary valve 242. The fluid can then pass through either of two passages, according to the setting of the valve, to the spring-containing bore 230 of the plunger 226 and thence through a one-way valve 235 to the end 234 of the housing. Each of the passages from the valve 242 is partially obstructed by a plug valve, that of one passage being arranged to permit faster flow of fluid than that of the other passage.
