Abstract
1,166,681. 7-Chloro-6-demethyl tetracycline. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 31 Oct., 1966 [15 Nov., 1965; 16 Sept., 19661, No. 48781/66. Heading C2A. 7 - Chloro - 6 - demethyl tetracycline is produced in a conventional manner by the submerged aerobic cultivation of a 7-ohloro-6-demethyltetracycline-producing strain of Streptomyces aureofaciens which is characterized by its ability to impart to a 200 fold aqueous dilution of the whole harvest mash (defined) a colour characterized by either, (a) A reflectance curve, when plotted linearly, wherein the values of the per cent reflectance at 460 mÁ, 540 mÁ, 560 mÁ and 660 mÁ when substituted into the formula gives a positive value for #R; or (b) a reflectance curve such that when the per cent reflectance is plotted linearly against the wavelength, the resulting curve between 460 mÁ and 530 mÁ will have one point of inflection and will have at least one point of zero slope and will be convex upward to the left of the point of inflection and concave upward to the right of the point of inflection. 7 - Chloro - 6 - demethyl tetracycline is produced with no more than 5% of 6-demethyltetracycline. The strains specified are direct descendants of the 7-chloro tetracycline-producing strain Streptomyces aureofaciens NRRL 2209 (Specification 690,381) and have been obtained therefrom by mutagenic processes known to the art. They have been designated, NRRL 3201 (IE 1352), NRRL 3202, NRRL 3203, NRRL 3204, NRRL 3234 and NRRL 3235 and their reflectance curves are shown in Figs. 11, and 12 to 16 (not shown). 7-Chloro-6-demethyl tetracycline is disclosed in Specification 855,169.
