Abstract

1,166,386. Comminuting hops. WOLTON HOP EXTRACTS Ltd. 24 April, 1968 [27 April, 1967], No. 19397/67. Addition to 1,082,726. Heading B2A. '[Also in Division C6] The process for the production from hop material of a hop extract having a high lupulin content described and claimed in Specification No. 1,082,726 is improved or modified by cooling the hop material to a temperature between 0‹ and -50‹C by contact with a normally gaseous inert refrigerant in the solid or liquid phase (liquid nitrogen, or liquid or solid carbon dioxide) prior to the mechanical disintegration and screening. The refrigerant is directed towards or on to the hop material, which is blanketed by the gas produced by vaporisation of the refrigerant at least up to and during the disintegration step. At least part of the refrigerant gas may be withdrawn after the disintegration or screening stages for recycling to a point between the cooling and disintegration stages. The cooling may be done on a belt conveyer or in a rotatable drum provided with a removable cover at its input end and a large mesh screen at its output end. It is stated that lupulin-rich material may be added directly to malt extract.
