Abstract

A compression mould has a mould cavity 12, Fig. 2, an overflow well 21, in the female member 10, a plunger 23 in said well biased to substantially close said well by means which yields in response to moulding pressure in excess of a predetermined value to allow excess plastics to enter the well and to compensate for shrinkage. The plunger may be biased by a spring or fluid pressure. In another example, in which an article of non-uniform thickness is produced, Fig. 3, an additional chamber 37 in the female member communicates with the cavity and contains a plunger 37 biased, e.g. by a spring or by fluid pressure, to exert a pressure on the material so as to compensate for shrinkage. The material supplied to the mould may come from an extruder directly or indirectly and be measured as described in Specification 1,166,168.
