In an electrostatic precipitator for removing dust from a gaseous stream and comprising precipitation and discharge electrodes 2, 3, Fig. 1, at least two additional precipitation electrodes 4, 5 are provided downstream of the electrodes 2, 3 for removing from the gaseous stream remaining charged dust particles which have escaped precipitation on the electrodes 2. The precipitation electrodes 4, 5 which are mounted one after the other as seen in the direction of flow and which extend transversely across the flow path have flanges or projections facing the direction of flow and bounding free flow paths through the electrodes, the flow paths being offset with respect to each other. The precipitator shown is of the two-stage type with two additional precipitation electrodes arranged downstream of each set of precipitation and discharge electrodes. Each additional precipitation electrode may be in the form of a group of U- shaped strip-like elements, the limbs of which may have flanges 6, Fig. 2, with their free ends turned to extend in the direction of flow. Alternatively, each additional electrode may consist of a plate 7/8 having apertures 9/10 surrounded by collars or flanges 11/12. The apertures may differ in size from the apertures 10. The electrodes may be cleaned by vibration.
