Abstract

1,073,901. Electrostatic & magnetic separation. HITACHI Ltd. Sept. 14, 1964, No. 37517/ 64. Heading B2J. The ionizing section 5 of an electrostatic precipitator for the treatment of dust-laden air is composed of a number of grounded electrodes 1, 2 arranged parallel to the direction of the air stream, of relatively thin ionizing filaments 3 extending transversely to the air stream between adjacent grounded electrodes, and of relatively thick, substantially non-discharging, auxiliary electrodes 4 which are disposed parallel to the filaments 3 at either the upstream or downstream side thereof when viewed in the direction of the air flow and which are maintained, in operation, at the same potential as the filaments 3 so that they materially affect the electric field (as shown, for example, at b in Fig. 2) formed between the filaments and the grounded electrodes. The provision of the auxiliary electrodes makes it possible to increase the strength of the electric field in the ionizing section without point discharge occurring between the ionizing filaments and the ends of the electrodes 1, 2 and without increase in the formation of ozone. The electrodes 4 are preferably made from a conductive wire or rod of round cross-section. The section 5 is followed by a collecting section 6 comprising spaced parallel electrode plates 7 and 8 which are respectively grounded and connected to a D.C. power source.
