Material is pressed into two cans 24 simultaneously by plungers 102, 104 which press material out of measuring boxes 16 as these move with the cans. In the form illustrated, empty cans carried by rotating plates 20, 22 are first raised by rollers 68 engaging a cam track 72 into sealing engagement with a plate 82 cooperating with plates 86, 84 to carry the measuring boxes in synchronism with the cans. The measuring boxes and cans are filled with loose material which is manually levelled with the plate 84, and then pass beneath the plungers 102, 104 which are moved in circular paths 110, 112 to compress the material into the cans. Each plunger 102, 104 may terminate in a pneumatically operated extension (Fig. 8, not shown), so that the compressing stroke can be varied. The plungers are driven by cranks 160, 162, the stroke of which may be varied, and are constrained by guides 124 to follow the path of the cans. The volume of the measuring boxes 16 may be varied. A further pair of plungers may provide an initial compression. The cans are fed to and from the plates 20, 22 by star wheels (34), (38), (Fig. 2, not shown), and are located in notches in the plate 22 by guide 35.
