Abstract
An apparatus for packing a compressible, fragmentary material into packages, including a vertical magazine through which the compressible material can be fed into the package, and a reciprocating pressing ram, positioned to move from an initial position above of the loader down through the loader to compress the material inside the container and then up through the loader to the initial position, which apparatus comprises: a feed means constructed and positioned to direct the compressible material along a path generally through the top of the charger; a diverting plate means mounted on the top of the magazine and movable between a stored position wherein the plate means is placed in at least an almost vertical position on the side of the magazine to allow the pressing piston to pass through of the magazine and a deviation position wherein the plate means slopes downward and inward relative to the top of the magazine to intercept the compressible material and divert it to a location that usually remains through the magazine; an operating means connected to the diverting plate means and which is constructed and positioned to cause at least a portion of the diverting plate means to assume the successively offset position in a plurality of different positions, spaced around the top of the charger; and a control means connected to the operating means and functioning to cause the control means to maintain the deflection plate means in the stored position when the pressing piston is not in its initial position to move the platen means.
