A carton packer comprises a valve-actuated elevator 16 for vertically raising successive unit layers 55 of packages to form a stack, a valve-actuated pusher 34 for laterally pushing the stack into the open end of a carton 57 and a valve-actuated support 45 for lowering the carton into an unloading position. As described, packages are fed between adjustable guides (14) (Fig. 1, not shown), on to the elevator 16, the leading package pressing a trigger 20 which causes the elevator 16 to rise and then fall, leaving the layer of packages 55 supported on spring-loaded catch plates 15. When sufficient layers have been collected in this way, a trigger 41 is pressed by the topmost layer to cause the pusher 34 to push the packages into the carton 57, the elevator 16 remaining in its upper position. After several tiers of packages have been loaded, the carton on support 45 is lowered by a cylinder 48, controlled by a cam (Figs. 7-9, not shown) turned through one increment each time a tier is pushed into the carton. Alternatively, the apparatus may load only a single tier into each carton. The operations of the apparatus are effected by pneumatic means controlled by a pneumatic relay circuit.
