Abstract

Bulk storage containers are cooled on land by connection to a thermally insulated duct receiving cooled air from a refrigeration unit. As illustrated in Fig. 2, air is circulated from a duct 13 to a number of containers 10 arranged along the length of the duct and is returned through a duct 12 to a refrigeration unit 9 for recirculation. As illustrated in Fig. 3, containers 10 are connected to air ducts 15 which in turn are connected to two air coolers 16. The coolers 16 are connected into two ring mains 19 and 20 through which refrigerant is circulated at different temperatures by refrigeration units 18 and 17. Valves adjustably connect the coolers to the ring mains so that the air temperatures in the ducts 15 may be varied. Ducts (11), Fig. 4 (not shown), connecting the ducts 15 to the containers 10, and the containers themselves are provided with valves which close the ducts 11 and container 10 when the latter are not connected but which open by automatic operation of rams when connection is made.
