Abstract

790,828. Refrigerating. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 13, 1956 [Sept. 13, 1955], No. 28020/56. Class 29 [Also in Group XXIX] In a reversible compression refrigeration system having indoor and outdoor evaporator-condenser units, 3 and 4 respectively, for heating or cooling an enclosure, a condensate sump 7 is associated with preferably the outdoor units 4 and is provided with temperature responsive drain means. The condensate in the sump 7 is splashed over the outdoor unit 4 by a slinger 12 attached to a fan 8. The drain means comprise a bi-metallic valve 20 attached to a rod 18 fixed in a drain 17. At high temperatures the valve is saucer shaped blocking the drain 17 as shown in Fig. 3, but at lower temperatures, when the outdoor unit may be required as an evaporator or when there is danger of the condensate freezing in the sump, the valve assumes a flat shape (Fig. 1) allowing the sump to drain. In modifications the valve 20 may be caused to move a rod carrying a plug for the drain or may take the form of a bi-metallic rod having a plug. fixed to the end.
