Abstract

1,164,072. Control of A.C. motors. DANFOSS A.S. 20 May, 1968 [27 May, 1967], No. 23898/68. Heading H2J. A single-phase motor has main and starting windings 2, 3, and a PTC-resistor is connected in series with the starting winding. This resistor has a stable operating point on either side of the peak of its current-voltage curve, the resistor being at the low-value stable position when it is heated only by the starting current. A heating resistor 8 is connected across the supply lines, and delayed by its mass and by a thermal insulator 9, affects the resistor 7 only towards the end of a selected period. The resistor then changes over to its other stable operating point so that the starting current is reduced to a low value. The resistor 8 may be energized for the entire running period of the motor, or may be switched on only for a brief interval towards the end of the starting period. The resistor 8 may carry the main winding current, or it may be in parallel with the starting winding.
