Abstract

1,242,549. Temperature-dependent resistors. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. 9 Oct., 1968 [17 Oct., 1967], No. 47861/68. Heading H1K. [Also in Division H2] A split phase induction motor has a main winding W3, and a starting winding W4 which is in series with a capacitor C1 as well as a PTC switching element 13 with a sharply defined transition temperature above which the resistance increases sharply. The element 13 comprises a mass of material such as barium titanate doped with lanthanum or carbon black filled polyethylene, with a neck portion 19. Heat sinks 17, 18, cause the mass 15 to cool at a rate corresponding to that of the motor when it is deenergized. An auxiliary heater may be connected in series with the winding W3. After the motor is started, the element reaches its transition temperature to reduce the energization of winding WH to a level suitable for continuous running of the motor.
