Abstract
1,042,126. Control of A.C. motors. DANFOSS A.S. Feb. 25, 1964 [Feb. 25, 19631, No. 7856/64. Heading H2J. The starting winding of a split-phase motor is connected in series with a resistor having a marked positive temperature coefficient the resistor becoming heated during the starting period so that its resistance increases to limit the starting current to a low steady value. The resistor also affords protection for the starting winding if the rotor is stalled. The starting winding may be disconnected by a switch when the motor reaches full speed. The resistor can be associated with an additional heating winding in series with the main motor winding, or the resistor mounted on the motor housing which becomes warm during operation. The resistor may be connected in series with one capacitor and in parallel with another. Examples of the kind of resistor for use in the starting circuit are the iron-hydrogen type, or the type based on barium titanate and strontium or zircon with impurities such as lanthanum, yttrium, or cerium. In another form, the resistor comprises carbon granules in a gas-filled container having a flexible wall. Under heat, the gas expands to reduce the pressure on the carbon granules.
