Abstract

1522836 Monitoring temperature of dynamoelectric machines UNELEC 28 Aug 1975 [2 Sept 1974] 35598/75 Headings H2K and H2A An arrangement for monitoring the temperature of the rotor of an electrical machine comprises one or more first temperature-sensitive elements 11 mounted on the stator but positioned so as to sense radiation from the rotor 25, and a second, compensating, temperature-sensitive element 13 also mounted on the stator but responsive only to the ambient temperature in the vicinity of the rotor. The first elements 11 may be painted black and mounted on a heatreflecting aluminium sheet supported by an insulating ring 23 inside the stator end windings 21 so as to face a squirrel cage end ring 24. The second element is carried by a projection from the insulating ring 23 and positioned axially beyond the rotor. The temperature-sensitive elements may be thermocouples, but preferably they comprise positive- and negative-temperature coefficient resistors connected (Fig. 4) in series with a fixed resistor 12 across a voltage source. When the difference between rotor temperature and ambient temperature reaches a predetermined amount a circuit 16 is triggered to de-energize a main relay or triac 2 via SCR 8 and reed relay 5, and to insert an extra resistance 15 in the series network so that the circuit will not reset until the temperature difference has fallen to a lower level.
