Abstract

Relates to plate or tubular heat exchangers in which passageways for a fluid to be heated are formed between spaced-apart passageways for the heating fluid defined by walls separating said two fluids from one another. According to the invention, in such a heat exchanger, an ionic discharge is created in the passageways for one or both fluids and is said to effect an increase in the rate of heat transfer by generating a transverse flow component in the fluid. The ions may be discharged from electrodes (38) charged from a suitable source of direct current, the electrodes being mounted on and electrically insulated from the passage walls. The discharge of ions may be periodically terminated to enable the fluid or fluids to scour the passage walls of deposits.
