Abstract
1,163,909. Thermochemical scarfing apparatus. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 18 Nov., 1966 [22 Nov., 1965], No. 51756/66. Heading B3V. A thermochemical scarfing apparatus comprises upper and lower blocks T, B each with a row of gas discharge ports 10, 24 extending transversely of the work W and the ports in at least one of the blocks have a non-circular crosssection. The block with the non-circular ports has a gas mixing means 12 connected to an oxygen source 16 and a fuel gas supply 20. A sheet-like stream of high pressure oxygen is discharged from the slots between the blocks on to a molten slag-iron puddle formed upon the work by the preheat gas from the ports 10 in the upper block. The lower ports may be circular and are preferably only used during the scarfing to confine the stream of oxygen to its sheet-like configuration. While the fuel gas for the preheat combustible mixture should not be acetylene for safety reasons, acetylene may be used for the lower flames. The crosssection of the upper ports may be rectangular, triangular, star-shaped &c. The apparatus is particularly suited for scarfing cold steel but may also be used for hot steel.
