Abstract

1,056,628. Cutting stone. H. E. FLETCHER CO. Sept. 27, 1965, No.41068/65. Heading B5E. [Also in Division F4] A method of flame-working a heat spallable mineral body, such as granite, comprises introducing into a chamber of a flame-cutting apparatus 2 a mixture of fuel and oxidant, burning the mixture in the chamber at superatmospheric pressure to form a flow of products of combustion, introducing into the flow a second quantity of fuel and directing the flame jet 4 into contact with an exposed surface of the mineral body. The flame jet 4 applied to the surface of the mineral body induces thermal stresses therein so that a differential expansion in particles 3, 4a, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 causes the latter to separate along planes of joinder 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 without the particles themselves being broken down. As shown, in Fig. 2, a flame tool 20 for cutting through a block of stone 21a is attached to a vertically adjustable carrier 22 mounted on a support 24. The flame tool may be used for cutting a hole in the stone.
