Abstract

1396996 Flame cutting apparatus SUMITOMO KENSETSU KK 11 May 1972 [12 May 1971 6 Oct 1971 28 Jan 1972] 22061/72 Heading F4T A method of flame cutting stone, concrete or like material comprises burning in a combustion chamber a mixture comprising kerosene and oxygen to form a jet flame, ejecting the flame from the combustion chamber at supersonic velocity, supplying cooling fluid to the external wall of said chamber or to said external wall and about the periphery of the flame, directing said flame against an area of the material to be cut and supplying to the flame a composition comprising iron oxide and aluminium. Apparatus used in carrying out the method comprises a supply pipe 12 from which kerosene is injected into a combustion chamber through outlets 10, and an oxygen supply passage 13-15. The composition is supplied under pressure through pipe 23 and cooling water is pumped through the space 29 and discharges through outlets 30 so that it surrounds the flame. In a modification the outlets 30 are omitted and water is discharged through an additional sleeve surrounding the combustion chamber. A sound muffling device may be provided and comprises inner and outer tubes 32, 34, the inner tube having projections formed with openings 36. Water is fed into the device by pump 41 and flows through openings 36 into tube 32 from which it is discharged to the periphery of the flame. The combustion chamber is adjustably mounted in the device by means of screws 39.
