Abstract
1,163,647. Determining di-isocyanates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 25 July, 1968 [28 July, 1967], No. 34835/67. Heading B1X. [Also in Division Gl] A gas permeable filter paper of predetermined size impregnated with a solution of a soluble nitrite, a coupling agent, a buffer and a dialkyl phthalate in methyl alcohol and water and dried, is used for the estimation of 2:4 and 2:6 tolylene diisocyanates in the atmosphere by a method which comprises passing a predetermined volume of air through the paper, and comparing the colour produced on the paper with calibrated colour standards. The coupling agent may be 2:3-hydroxy naphthoic anilide or 2:3-hydroxy naphthoic mnitroanilide but is preferably 5-hydroxy-3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP>- benzocarbazole-4-carboxy-p-anisidide, and the soluble nitrite may be an alkali metal nitrite such as sodium or potassium nitrite or ammonium nitrite. The preferred buffer is ammonium acetate and the preferred dialkyl phthalate is diethyl phthalate. The preparation of the colour standards using fast pigments is described in the specification.
