Abstract

1,163,578. Defrosting frozen fish. AFOS Ltd. and A. F. SNELLING. 14 April, 1967 [15 Jan., 1966], No. 1994/66. Heading A2D. A method of defrosting frozen fish comprises exposing the fish to a flow of warm moisture-saturated air, the direction of air flow being periodically reversed. A suitable apparatus comprises a top section 12, connected to a bottom section 10 by ducts 24, 38. The top section comprises reversible impeller 14, heaters 18, 20 and humidifiers 21, 39 and the bottom section comprises diffuser walls 26, 36 and heaters 32 and contains open-ended and opensided trolleys 30. The trolleys 30 may hold trays with or without bars arranged across them or the trolleys may contain bars positioned above the trays. The humidifiers may comprise steam injectors. The heaters may be electric or comprise tubes using hot water or steam. In use the apparatus is a closed system, the air flow is periodically reversed by control means (not shown) reversing impeller 14 and the air is only humidified by the humidifier downstream of the impeller. The air may flow from impeller 14 past heater 18 and operating humidifier 21 to duct 24, through diffuser wall 26, trolleys 30 and diffuser wall 36 to duct 38 and then past inoperative humidifier 39 and heater 20 to impeller 14. When the air flow is reversed humidifier 39 is operating and humidifier 21 is inoperative.
