Abstract

116,353. Warren, F. S. June 8, 1917. Torpedo screens.-Ships are protected from mines and torpedoes by a defence screen consisting of interconnected and interacting parts. At each side are arranged plates 3, 4 supported at the tops by hinged plates 5, Fig. 3, and near the bottoms by hinged plates 10, Fig. 4. The tops of the plates 5, 10 are fitted with levers 8, 13 respectively connected to operating-rods 9. In a modification, a double screen 29, 4 is fitted, hinged to the sides 1 in the manner shown in Fig. 5. In further modifications, alternative forms of pivots for these plates are used. To the forward ends of the shields 3, 4 are hinged shields 16, 17 to which is in turn hinged a cap 19 supported by travellers 21 from the the plate 2. The defence is completed by a telescopic frame at the stern supported on travellers 28.
