Abstract

1,163,149. Fuel cell. NETHERLANDS APPLIED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FOR INDUSTRY, TRADE & COMMERCE. 5 Dec., 1966 [6 Dec., 1965], No. 54331/66. Heading H1B. A fuel cell comprises an ion-conductive membrane as electrolyte, at least one surface of which carries an electron conductive powder, the powder being applied to the surface by roughening it and rubbing the powder on. The membrane may be an ion-exchange membrane, e.g. a sulphonated ethylene styrene copolymer in the acid form. It may be roughened to a depth of 20 microns and coated with 1-30 mg./cm.<SP>2</SP> of powder. The powder may be a catalyst for the cell reaction, e.g. Pt black, Pd black or finely divided Ni or Ag. In the case of an H 2 or O 2 electrode the powder may be backed with Pt gauze and then with a ribbed perforated stainless steel collector plate. In the case of an air electrode the membrane may be mounted vertically, powdered and backed with gauze and a conducting plate with ribs running vertically held against the gauze to form a number of vertical chimneys through which a convection current of air flows as a result of heat liberated in the cell reaction.
