Abstract
1,202,068. Electrolytic cells for air purification. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Sept. 21, 1967 [Sept.27, 1966], No.42967/67. Heading C7B. An electrolytic cell for air purification comprises a porous metal or metal oxide anode, a porous air cathode and an electroyte matrix pad impregnated with an acid e. g. H2 SO4 sandwiched between the two electrodes connected to a D. C. source. Stale or contaminated air is contacted with a single cell or through a plurality of cells connected in series or parallel. The anode may be a screen fabricated from PbO2, a perforated sheet of Pb or Pb+Bi or Pb+Sb alloy coated with a PbO2 layer, or Pt black or MnO2 supported on a Ta screen. The air cathode may be a Pt group metal, i.e. Pd, Rh, Ru, Os, Ir or Pt, or Au, which may be graphitized, porous C or graphite, graphitized polyethylene, methylmethacrylate or PTFE, preferably fabricated on a Ta screen. The matrix pad may be of filter paper, glass fibre, asbestos mat or polymeric ion exchange material.
