Abstract

1,194,642. Fuel cell electrode. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 29 March, 1968 [19 April, 1967], No. 15106/68. Heading H1B. A fuel cell electrode comprises a support material with a gas adsorbing catalyst dispersed thereon, the support material being a metal silicide, tantalum boride or titanium boride. The catalyst may be platÝnum and may be 0À1-50% of the weight of the support. The metal silicide may be tungsten silicide and the support may be of less than 400 mesh particle size. In examples the catalyst is applied to the support by immersing the support in aqueous chloroplatinic acid, drying it and reducing it with H 2 . This product may then be mixed with 5-50% of PTFE in the form of a paste and applied to a Pt grid. Finally a coating of PTFE may be sprayed on to one side and bonded by heating. In Fig. 1, 15 is the catalytic mass, 11 the metal grid with terminal 12, and 16 the PTFE coating. The electrode may be used as anode in an H 2 /O 2 cell using a conventional Pt black cathode and H 2 SO 4 as electrolyte.
