Abstract

1,162,856. Metal pipes; pipe joints. R. E. LAWRENCE. 2 Feb., 1967, No. 5169/67. Headings F2G and F2P. [Also in Division F4] A steel smokestack or breeching is made in sections 10 having terminal plate flanges 14, 15 with holes 14<SP>1</SP>, 15<SP>1</SP> for bolts or the like to join the sections together, each section comprising axially aligned portions 11, 12, 13 with concentric inner and outer walls 23, 22 forming a smoke conduit and a surrounding dead space sealed at its ends by the plate flanges 14, 15, the portions 11, 12, 13 being braced at uniformly spaced intervals by stiffeners 18, 19, 20, 21 extending above and below the joints 17 of the portions. In modifications (Figs. 3-7, not shown), the axially aligned portions are made in four or six segmental parts with radially and axially extending flanges (F) whereby the parts are secured together. In further modifications (Figs. 9 to 15, not shown), the outer wall has an accordion-like fold (30a) at its upper end to allow for differential axial expansion between the inner and outer walls, this fold being surrounded by an apron (40a) welded to the top plate flange (32a). Relative expansion is also permitted by stiffeners comprising interfitting T-pieces (56, Fig. 12, not shown) and sockets (62). Some of the axially aligned portions have V or inverted V-section rings (94, 95, 96, Figs. 18 to 20, not shown) welded to them to permit relative sliding movement between these portions.
