Abstract
1,162,799. Modified titanium dioxide. IM. PERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd., and BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 27 Oct., 1967 [25 Nov., 1966], No. 48125/68. Divided out of 1,162,798. Heading C1N. A TiO 2 pigment containing an amount of an Sb compound is coated with an Mn compound at least part of which is in the manganous state. The amount of Sb may be 0À02-5% (calculated as Sb 2 O 3 ) and the amount of Mn 0À05-2% (as MnO) by weight based on the final pigment. The pigment may be obtained by calcining a mixture of TiO 2 and Sb 2 O 3 , Sb 2 O 5 or K antimonyl tartrate. It may be coated with Mn(OH) 2 by adding a water-soluble Mn salt and an alkali to an aqueous TiO 2 suspension, or it may be treated with a water-insoluble salt, e.g. Mn stearate. Other coatings referred to are Mn phosphate and silicate. The TiO 2 may also be coated with a hydrous oxide of Ti, Al, Si, Ce or Zr, or with Al phosphate or silicate. The TiO 2 may be rutile or anatase, and may be obtained by the sulphate or chloride process.
