Abstract
1,207,512. Coating titanium dioxide. FABRIQUES DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE THANN ET DE MULHOUSE, and CABOT CORP. 2 Nov., 1967, No. 49960/67. Heading C1N. [Also in Division C3] The surface of pigmentary TiO 2 is modified by first adding an aqueous solution of an aluminium compound, such as aluminium sulphate, sodium aluminate or aluminium chloride, to a suspension of TiO 2 the average particle diameter of which is between 150 and 400 millimicrons, neutralizing the mixture to form an inner coating of insoluble hydrous alumina on the TiO 2 particles, and subsequently adding a solution of a silicate preferably sodium silicate, to the suspension to form an outer coating of insoluble hydrous silica, the weight of silica being more than 1% by weight of the TiO 2 particles. A coating of insoluble hydrous TiO 2 may also be deposited prior to, simultaneously with or after the formation of the Al 2 O 3 coating, but before the formation of the SiO 2 coating by neutralizing with an alkaline or acidic material a suspension of TiO 2 which contains dissolved TiCl 4 or which contains dissolved TiCl 4 and aluminium sulphate or sodium aluminate.
