Abstract
1392189 Surface treated pigments LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 Oct 1972 [22 Oct 1971] 49291/71 Addition to 1334711 Heading C1N [Also in Divisions C3R and C3P] Pigments are surface treated with 0À1-60% by wt. of a polylactone in liquid form or in solution. TiO 2 pigments treated with polylactones having terminal OH groups are disclaimed. The preferred polylactone is polycaprolactone with terminal COOH groups. It may be added in solution in chloroform or ethyl acetate, or in aqueous emulsion, or in liquid form, to an aqueous slurry of the pigment, or it may be added in solid form to a slurry at a temperature such that it melts. The pigment is then dried and may be fluid energy milled. Lubricants, e.g. Mg, Zn or Al stearate, stearic acid, polyethylene wax, or paraffin oil, and various surfactants, may also be added. The pigment may initially be surface coated with oxides, phosphates or sulphates of Be, Ca, Mg, Ba, B, Al, Si, Sn, Pb, Sb, Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta, Mn, Zn or Ce, by conventional methods. In the examples, the pigment is rutile TiO 2 coated with Al 2 O 3 or Al 2 O 3 + SiO 2 .
