Abstract

1,162,613. Liquid cooling of electrical machine rotors. SOC. GENERALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES ET MECANIQUES (ALSTHOM). 10 July, 1967 [13 July, 1966; 24 March, 1967], No. 31697/67. Heading H2A. In an electrical machine having a rotor 2 provided with a damper winding 3 in thermal contact with cooling ducts 7, a cooling liquid reservoir 6 is located in the central part of the rotor and passages 11, 12 so interconnect the reservoir and duct ends as to establish therebetween a natural circulation of the liquid when the machine is started up as a motor. In the embodiment shown, the flow is through tubes 8 inserted into the ducts 7, and manifolds 9, 10; the rotor is vertically disposed, whereby the circulation is effected by thermo-syphon principle, and the reservoir, formed by a walled-off portion of the hollow rotor shaft 1, may be either sealed or vented to the atmosphere. In other embodiments, the ends of passages 11, 12 are inclined circumferentially in opposite directions within the reservoir in order to circulate the liquid by virtue of its inertia with respect to the speed of the reservoir.
