Abstract

818,441. Dynamo - electric machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Dec. 24, 1957 [Aug. 14, 1957], No. 25665/57. Class 35. [Also in Group XXVI] The mechanical inertia of a machine coupled to a turbine is made as great as possible by making the rotor the outer member. The machine is mounted inside a housing 4 supported on arms 3 in a draft tube 1 through which water flows. The machine may act as a generator driven by an impeller 8, 9 or it may act as a motor driving it to give a pumping action. The rotor 16 is mounted on the shaft 14 through a disc 20, the shaft being hollow to accommodate connections 23 to slip-rings 24, and also control leads for the regulation of the pitch of the turbine blades 9. The rotor is preferably provided with inwardly directed poles 22. The stator and rotor have end baffles 28, 27, a further stator baffle 29 at the other end being provided if desired. Cooling air circulates through axial passages 31 and radial stator cooling ducts 19, through openings 30 in the disc 20 which may carry fan-blades. The air is cooled in passage 26 by contact with the housing 4, fan blades 31<SP>1</SP> and heat-exchange fins 32 or cooling pipes being provided in the passage 26, if desired. In addition, cooling water directed by a scoop 38 passes by pipe 37 to a header, 34 connected to a further header 36 by pipes 35 passing through bores in the stator core, eddy-currents being prevented by an insulating insert. The cooling water leaves by a pipe 33 and scoop 38a. Water may be circulated in hollow armature conductors. Ingress of water is prevented by a gland 10 (see Group XXVI) at the turbine hub 8, and by pressurizing the machine housing 4 through a pipe 43. The bearings 13 may be cooled by circulated water. The machine may be synchronous or asynchronous. Specification 769,223 is referred to.
