Abstract
1,162,581. Potentiometers; inductive potentiometers. PAINTON & CO. Ltd. 21 Feb., 1967 [2 Dec., 1966], No. 54152/66. Headings HIS and H1T. A resistive or inductive potentiometer has a rotatable wiper 10 continuously engaging a take-off contact 31 and formed by a resiliently flexible metal strip (8) (Fig. 1, not shown), bearing on an arcuate impedance track 21 and spot welded to the head 4 of a metal stud (2) having a cylindrical shank 3 providing a bearing for the wiper. The conductive plate 31 makes electrical contact with terminal plate 33 via the coil spring 32. The wiper is in the form of a loop (8) (Fig. 2, not shown) spot-welded to the frustro-conical undersurface (6) of the stud of silvered brass. The impedance track is wirewound. The assembly may be mounted on an L-shaped angle bracket. In a modification, (Figs. 6-11, not shown) a Y-shaped resilient strip carrying a dimple (58) co-operates with recesses (63) in the carrier (61) to form a " slipping clutch " so that when the carrier is turned the wiper traverses the impedance track until it reaches the end thereof and abuts a stop (72). Continued turning of the carrier in the same direction causes the dimple to ride over the recesses to provide the " slipping clutch " action.
