Abstract
1,197,690. Variable resistors. STACKPOLE CARBON CO. 15 Oct., 1968 [23 Oct., 1967], No.48858/68. Heading H1S. A rotary variable resistor comprises a substrate, a coating 3 of resistance material thereon of rectangular shape, a pair of terminals 4 projecting from the edge of the coating, at least one of the terminals being at a corner of the coating, said coating having a gap 6 extending from said edge between said terminals and then part way around the centre of the coating. The substrate and coating are equipped with an aperture 5 for receiving a rotatable shaft. The resistance curve can be adjusted by punching holes 8 or a notch in the substrate, or by forming grooves in the substrate and coating the grooves with the resistance material in order to lower the resistance of that portion (Fig. 3, not shown). Various alternative methods of forming the gap are described including one in which the slot is cut in the substrate before the resistance coating is applied (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), and one in which an integral ridge is formed on the substrate, the substrate then being coated and the coating on the ridge being removed (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). Three potentiometers utilizing the invention are described. In the first, a metal current collector is attached to the face of the substrate opposite the coating, two sliders being provided on the rotatable spindle to contact the coating and the collector. In the other two embodiments the coating and the collector are placed in a spaced-apart face to face relationship on separate substrates with an insulating rotor carrying the contact disposed therebetween. In one arrangement (Figs. 10 to 13, not shown), the contact is in the form of a wide ring or a coil spring (42) which contacts both the coating and the collector and abuts the outer casing of the device. In another (Figs. 14 to 17, not shown), the contact is in the form of a metal bridging contact (69) disposed in an aperture in the rotor.
