Abstract
857,466. Electric pens for recording instruments. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO. Ltd. Aug. 18, 1958 [Nov. 5, 1957], No. 34527/57. Class 146(3). A recorder of the kind in which recording is effected on electro-sensitive paper by passing electric current through a recording stylus in contact with said paper has a recording stylus made of an electrically conductive, hard metallic carbide and spring-biased towards the paper. As shown the stylus comprises a rod 2 of tungsten carbide the lower end of which is rounded at 2a. The rod is resistance welded at x to a beryllium-copper spring 3 which serves as the spring mounting for the stylus. After welding the rounded end 2a of the stylus may be ground to a point 2b for contact with the paper. The. stylus may also be made of titanium carbide or a sintered mixture of tungsten carbide and titanium carbide with hard metal cementing agents such as chromium or cobalt. The rod 2, instead of being resistance-welded to the spring 3, may be fitted in a bushed hole in the spring and fixed there by a synthetic resin adhesive. When the adhesive is set a deposited layer of silver is evaporated on over the junction to provide a permanent electrical connection between the stylus and the spring. An outer protective jacket of surface coating resin may be provided over the silver layer.
