Abstract
1532093 Magnetoresistive heads PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 12 April 1976 [15 April 1975] 14770/76 Heading G5R A magnetic head has an elongate magnetoresistive element 1 with an easy axis of magnetization M parallel to its length, a middle contact 21 midway between end contacts 5 and 6, a strip, or a pattern of parallel strips, 11 to 15, of readily electrically conductive material on the portion 2 of element 1 between contacts 5 and 21 with the or each strip at an acute angle of 30 degrees to 60 degrees to the axis M, and a similar strip, or pattern of parallel strips 16 to 20, of readily electrically conductive material on the portion 3 of element 1 between contacts 6 and 21 with the or each latter strip at an obtuse angle to the axis M, the obtuse angle being the supplement of said acute angle. Each strip 11 to 20 forms a respective equipotential surface so that with current sources 7 and 8 connected as shown and with strips 11 to 15 at 45 degrees to axis M and strips 16 to 20 at 135 degrees to axis M, the equipotential surfaces cause the current I 1 in element half 2 to be at 135 degrees to axis M and the current I 2 in element half 3 to be at 45 degrees to axis M. A differential amplifier 9 subtracts the voltage across contacts 21 and 6 from that across contacts 21, 5. The arrangement linearizes the resistance/magnetic field characteristic of the element 1 as a whole and reduces so-called temperature noise due to resistance charges caused by temperature fluctuations. The element 1 may be Ni-Fe alloy, 1,200 Š thick, 200 microns long and 10 microns wide, strips 11 to 20 being of gold each 1 micron thick and 5 microns wide.
