Abstract
1368908 Magnetoresistive transducers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 10 Nov 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 51963/72 Heading G5R A head comprises a magnetoresistive element 28 adjacent a non-magnetic gap 34 dividing a magnetically permeable member 32, the element 28 being insulated by members 26, 30, which may be of SiO 2 . The element 28 may be of permalloy, as may the member 32 and be shielded by further magnetically permeable members 24, 38 of permalloy. An electrically conductive spacer 36 of non-magnetic material such as copper is inserted between members 32, 38, and the gap 34 may be constituted by the same material as the spacer 36. The head may, as shown, be made by thin film deposition on a glass substrate 22, the part outside lines AA, BB being discarded. Alternatively, the three magnetically permeable elements may be constituted by a unitary member having three legs (6, 8, 10), Fig. 1 (not shown), of permalloy or ferrite, the element (16) being secured across a gap (14) in the central leg. In recording, write currents are passed through the spacer 36. In reading, changes in the resistance of element 28 are measured, the element 28 being supplied with a bias current, and a bias magnetic field formed by passing current through the spacer 36.
