Abstract

116,257. Bowman, L. M., and Smith, W. A. May 29, 1917, [Convention date]. Firing - appliances; safety - appliances; sighting-accessories. - Relates to electric firing mechanism of the kind comprising a battery and induction coil, finger operated contacts for closing the primary circuit, and a spark gap in the secondary circuit at the ignition point. The invention consists mainly in (a) an insulation member adapted to be moved between the contacts to prevent them from being closed and (b) a cartridge primer. In the construction shown, the mechanism comprises a battery 5, an induction coil 6, a switch operated by the trigger 16, and a cartridge having an electric primer. The switch is in the primary circuit and comprises a stationary contact 12 and a movable contact 13 pivoted to the trigger 16. The safety-device comprises a plug 39 of insulating material adapted to be pushed up between the two contacts 12, 13. As an additional safety-device, a second switch 34 may be provided. The primer of the cartridge comprises an insulating plug 27, Fig. 3, a central electrode 28, and a metal casing 26, a sparkgap being between the end of the electrode 28 and the inturned end of the casing 26. A small electric lamp 48 is provided near the muzzle of the barrel.
