Abstract

1,161,882. Draw-twister. COURTAULDS Ltd. 2 Dec., 1966 [24 Nov., 1965; 25 March, 1966], Nos. 49923/65 and 13321/66. Heading D1D. In a draw twister the godet and the spindle are driven by the same motor, the drive to the spindle being through a variable speed device whereby the relative speed of spindle and godet may be changed. As shown a motor 1 drives the input shaft of a gearbox 5 via a variable speed device 3. A first output shaft 6 drives the godet, a second output shaft 7 drives a differential 8 the output shaft 9 of which drives the spindles and a third output shaft 10 drives, via a variable speed gear 11 a second input 12 to differential 8. Variable speed gear 11 is altered by a motor 13 controlled by a programme unit 15 e.g. a cam. During acceleration of godets and spindles the arrangement is such that the godet and spindles have the same surface speed. As the yarn package grows the variable speed gear 11 is altered to lower the spindle speed and ensure that the thread tension is left constant. When the packages are full the spnidles and godets are decelerated together so as to stop at the same time. Gear 11 may be replaced by an induction coupling transmitting drive from a constantly rotating shaft and controlled e.g. by a potential from a potentiometer controlled by a cam. In Fig. 1 of the drawings accompanying application number 13321/66 (not shown) output shafts (4, 11) of a gearbox (3) drive via variable speed devices (5, 12) the godets and spindles respectively. A tachometer (7), on the godet drive shaft gives a signal representing the shaft speed and this is compared in a control unit (9) with a datum signal and the variable speed device (5) adjusted as a result of the comparison. During the starting up and slowing down periods the datum signal in unit (9) is varied (e.g. by a wiper being moved across a potentiometer coil by means of a cam) to cause controlled acceleration and deceleration. During the package build a tachometer (14) on the spindle drive shaft feeds a signal to a control unit (15) to be compared with a datum signal which is derived from the tachometer (7) and modified e.g. by a cam-operated potentiometer. In a further form the rates of acceleration and deceleration of the primary driving motor itself are controlled by the load on the motor being varied to give the required acceleration. The load comprises a flywheel which the motor drives through a variable speed gear which is adjustable to provide the required adjustable load.
