Abstract

1,161,146. Frequency modulation. SOC. ITALIANA TELECOMUNICAZIONI SIEMENS S.p.A. 9 Aug., 1967 [9 Aug., 1966] No. 36595/67. Heading H3R. An oscillator is stabilized by a crystal and modulated in frequency by a varactor diode. Fig. 1 shows a diagram of a Colpitts oscillator (a practical circuit is illustrated in Fig. 4, not shown) comprising a crystal Q in series with a varactor D shunted by a coil L2 and arranged in series with a further coil L1. The modulation V m is applied across the varactor diode D. In another arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the unit M of Fig. 1 is connected between the base and collector of a transistor, capacitors (C1 and C2) being used to couple the emitter to the base and to the collector. Curves are given (Fig. 3, not shown) to show the frequency deviation as a function of V m for various ratios of L1 to L2.
