In a seat construction, a taut hammocklike seating surface 20 has lateral hems 21, 22 enclosing stiffly flexible steel bands 24, carried on a rigid base frame. The frame 1 consists of two inverted U-shaped side members, each cast in one piece from an aluminium alloy and joined by two stretchers 8, (19) of elliptical cross-section, extruded aluminium tubing 12. Cast metal end pieces 10 are provided to connect the stretchers 12 to the side members by means of glued spigot and socket joints (Fig. 6, not shown). The bands 24 are bolted to the side members at 32 (Fig. 5, not shown) and are interconnected by a nickel plated steel spreader bar (25) in a fold (30, Figs. 8-10, not shown) of open weave nylon seating material 20. Alternatively, in a chair without arm-rests 7a, (Figs. 11-13, not shown) the seating surface (70) is held taut by a cord (80) connected between a steel rod (78) and a transverse stretcher (59). In a chair having an integrally formed leg rest (Figs. 14-17, not shown), the end members of the chair frame may be integral castings or the legs (93, 94) may be cast separately and joined by tubular stretchers (96, 97). In a modification, the back-rest section may be of adjustable inclination (Figs. 18-30, not shown) and the chair frame may be supported, at the rear, on wheels (146). Sections (150a and 150b) of steel band (150) are interconnected by a hinge (152, Figs. 22-24, not shown).
