Description

N. E. COLE CHAIR Filed July 17, 1957 Patented Dec. Z7, 1938r PATENT OFFECE CHAIR Nelson E. Cole, Pittsburgh, Pa., assigner to The McKay Company, Pittsburgh, Pa., a corporation of Pennsylvania Application July 17, 1937, Serial No. 154,158
3 Claims.
My invention relates to chairs and the like, and more particularly to chairs or seats of the spring base type which are yieldable under the weight of a sitter.
One object of my invention is to provide a structure of the character referred to which is readily adjustable to Suit persons of Variolus weights and which will yield to various degrees of inclination.
Another object of my invention is to provide a spring base chair of generally simplified and improved form.
As shown in the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side View of a chair embodying my invention; Fig. 2 isa face view thereof; Fig. 3 is a view taken on'the line III- III of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an enlarged View taken on the line IV-V of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a view taken at right angles to the view of Fig. 4.
The structure includes a spring base composed of two flat bars of spring metal each bent to generally U shape, to form a floor bar '6, a leg 1, and a seat-support 8. 'I'he floor bars 6 are raised at their mid portions and are connected by a cross bar 9.
An upper frame includes a tubular member bent to form back portions I0, I I and I2, and seat bars I3 and I4. The portions I I and l2 are connected by a cross bar I5 whose ends are secured to the members I I and I2, and which is in turn connected to the portion Il) by vertical bars I6. The upper ends of the bars I6 are flattened and inserted into slots in the member I0, and their lower ends are connected to the bar I 5.
The seat bars I3 and I4 are connected by cross bars I8 and I9 which are secured thereto by bolts 20, and lattice bars 2| are welded to one another and to the bars I8 and I9, for supporting a seat cushion 22, a back cushion 23 being supported by the back bars.
A tubular member is bent to form arm rests 24 and 25, the rear ends of the same being suitably secured to the back bar members I I and I2 and the front portions being continuous to form a front bar portion 26 that is disposed forwardly of the legs 1. The forward ends of the seat bar portions I3 and I4 are bolted to the arm rest members 24 and 25 at points above the cross member 26. Pads 21 of Wood or other material are secured to the arm members 24 and 25.
'Ihe seat frame is supported upon the base frame by means of ange brackets or extensions 29 and 30 that are welded to the cross bars I8 and I9 and overlie the horizontal base members 8. The seat frame is slidably adjustable on the base as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l, in order to vary the degree of yieldability offered by the legs 'I and the members 8, to the Weight of a sitter. The cross bar I9 of the seat frame has at one end thereof a bracket extension 3I that is threaded to receive a set screw 32 which is brought into clamping engagement with the adjacentl member 8, to hold the seat frame at desired set positions on the base.
The cross member 26 will prevent the seat frame from accidentally being slid too far back on the base members, and as shown more clearly in Figs. 3 and 4, the portions 8 of the base are held against lateral displacement because they are disposed between the anges 30 and the seat bar members I3 and I4. .v
I claim as my invention:
l. Chair structure comprising legs, horizontally-extending seat-supporting members carried by the legs and disposed in laterally-spaced relation, a seat frame having a back portion and seat bars, cross bars connecting the said seat bars and eX- tending beneath the said horizontally-extending members, and ange members carried by said cross bars and over-lying the said horizontallyextending members.
2. Chair structure comprising legs, horizontally-extending seat-supporting members carried by the legs and disposed in laterally-spaced relation, a seat frame having a back portion and seat bars, cross bars connecting the said seatbars and extending transversely across one face of the said horizontally-extending members, flange members carried by said cross bars and engaging the opposite face of said horizontally-extending members, and a clamping device for securing the seat frame at desired positions of adjustment longitudinally of the said horizontally-extending members.
3. Chair structure comprising legs, horizontally-extending seat-supporting members carried by the legs and disposed in laterally-spaced re-r latio-n, a seat frame having a back portion and seat bars, cross bars connecting the said seat bars and extending beneath the said horizontallyextending members, and ange members carried by said cross bars and overlying the said horizontally-extending members, the said seat bars being disposed at the outer sides of the said horizontally-extending members in position to cooperate with said flanges so as to prevent lateral deection of the said horizontal members.
