TTO NEYS WALTER C. BEASANT, OF MANITOWOC, WISCONSIN.
COMBINED DESK AND snn'r.
Specification or Letters Patent.
Patent d June 17 1919.
Application filed October 9, 1916. Serial No. 124,471.
'To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVALTER C. BEAsANT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Manitowoc, in the county' of Manitowoc and State of lvisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Desks and Seats, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined desk and seat more particularly adapted for school use.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a combined desk and seat in which the desk or seat portion may be independently and easily adjusted'asto height in a' very simple manner. v
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined desk and seat inwhich the adjustable parts aremaintained in adusted positions and in which oolts are relieved of the strain of load.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a combined desk and seat which is of simple construction, is strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose described.
\Vith the aboi e and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved com- 'bined seatand desk andits parts and combina'tions as set forth in equivalents thereof. I
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the improved combined desk and seat;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional detail vlew taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 isavertical sectional detail view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1 ;.and
Fig. 4- is a horizontal-sectional detail view taken on line 4% of F ig. 1. A
Referring tothe'drawing the numeral 8 indicates one of a pair of standards, 9 one of a pair of seat frames and 10 one of a pair of desk frames. The standards 8 are adapted to be bolted to the floor in spaced rel-ation and are each provided along their front vertical edge portions 11 with rack teeth 12 andat their upper end portions with vertically extending elongated slots or openings 13.
The desk frames 10 are each boltedto the under side of the desk 14 and .the depending some of the the clalims, and all back 25 on which the seat 26 seat arms are stems thereof, which are of rectangular form in cross section, slidably extend through-the elongated slots 13 and are ad.
ustably secured -to the respective standards by bolts 16 which respectively extend through the side walls of the standards and through one of a series of openings 17pmvided'in each stem. extend in vertical lines to permit the vertical adjustment of the desk by the two bolts. Nuts 18 are provided for the bolts 16.
The rear portion 19 of each seat frame is bifurcated and straddles the front edge portion'll of its respective standard and is connected thereto through the bifurcated portion 19 and through one of'the series of openings 21 provided in the standard. The openings 21 are arranged in vertical lines so that the height of the seat may be-adjusted by eX tending the bolt through any of the openings.
The series of openings by a bolt- 20 which extends In order to relieve the bolts 20 of the strain 4 of supporting the weight of a person sitting upon the seat the seat frames 9 areprovided at their lower end portions with projecting lugs :22 which engage respectively the teeth '12 of the standards 8. As the lugsextend downwardly and the teeth upwardly the .bolts will be to a large extent'relieved of the strain of the load.
Each seat frame 9 is formedwith upstanding back arms 23 on which the seat 24is mounted and also with seat arms brackets 9 by ranged to mounted thereon to be swung to a vertical or closed position.v Shoulders 28 formed on the inner ends of the seat arms engage stop lugs 29 formed on the seat brackets when theseat is swung downwardly to hold the seat in proper position. 4 i k As the desk and'seat frames tinly require four bolts to connect them to the standards the parts maybe pivot bolts 27 and are ardesired to provide room for thoroughly cleaning thefioor beneath the desk and seat;
permit the arms and the seat easily and quickly removed from the standards in the event that it is;
issupported'. The pivotally connected to seat From the foregoing description it will seen that the combined desk and seat is of very simple construction and is well adapted forthe purpose described.
What I claim as my invention is:
. 1. A device of the character described,
comprising spaced standards each having a series of teeth on one edge and a series of through openings arranged in parallel relation to said teeth and spaced a distance apart equal to the length of each tooth, and
seat-frames each having a single projecting lug to engage any one of the teeth, and also a rear portion located above said lug and provided with openings adapted to aline' With one of the through openings of the standard when said projecting lug is en gaged with one of said teeth, bolts for engaging the openings in the seat frames and the registering openings in the standards, said seat frames being freely detachable from the standards at any point of attach- .ment after the securing bolts have been removed, and said projecting lugs and teeth being constructed to partially support the comprising spaced standards each having an lntermediate portion itormed relatively standards above said projecting lug, and
also provided With openings formed to ali'ne with the openings in the intern'lediate portion when the projecting lug is engaged with one of the teeth, bolts for engaging the openings in the seat-frames and standards, and a seat carried by the seat-frames.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature;
'lVALTER C. BEASANT.
25 narrower than the thickness of the stancl ard, each of said intermediate portions being provided w th. a series of teeth 'on lts'
