Abstract
1,160,691. Boots &c. COMPO SHOE MACHINERY CORP. 30 Aug., 1966 [27 Aug., 1965], No. 38682/66. Heading A3B. A method of mulling and heat setting a shoe upper includes the steps of penetrating at least a portion of the upper with a solution of a wetting agent, and thereafter subjecting the wetted upper, whilst on a last, to force draught drying. The solution of the wetting agent, e.g. a detergent, may be sprayed on to the shoe upper before or after lasting. The forced draught drying takes place in a stream of heated air moving at a velocity of 4,000 feet per minute at a temperature between 175‹F. and 300‹F., and may be followed by forced draught cooling in which air at ambient temperature is blown over the upper. Apparatus for performing the method consists of a rotor 18 (Fig. 3) which is divided into compartments by vanes 20 and which rotates in a housing 22 having an opening 24 for loading and unloading. After loading the uppers pass by sprays (not shown) which wet the upper and then into the housing 22. Region W is an air lock and in region X the uppers are subjected to forced draft drying. Region Y is a further airlock and in region Z the upper is subjected to forced draft cooling. If the upper is to be wetted before lasting the upper 10a is hung on a hook 38 (Fig. 6) in a housing 34 which is then moved past sprays 32. The upper may be subjected to additional moisturizing with water vapour following the spraying operation.
