A method of mulling uppers comprises treating the uppers alternately with warm air laden with wet steam, e.g. at a temperature of about 65‹C. and with a chilling means, e.g. air at room temperature, dry refrigerated air or air into which a cold water spray has been introduced. The upper should be given at least two treatments with hot air and at least one treatment with cold air and each treatment should last from ¢ to 2¢ minutes.
