Abstract

1,160,667. Oxides of Ti and Fe. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 1 July, 1968 [19 July, 1967], No. 31339/68. Headings C1A and C1N. TiO 2 is produced from a material containing Fe and Ti oxides, e.g. ilmenite, by reducing the Fe oxide to Fe, leaching the Fe with aqueous HCl, separating the TiO 2 , decomposing the Fe chloride solution into anhydrous Fe oxide and gaseous HC1, and condensing and recycling the HCL. The material may first be heated in O 2 at 750-1200‹ C. to oxidize Fe<SP>2+</SP> to Fe<SP>3+</SP> and then reduced with a gaseous, liquid, or solid reducing agent at 700-1300‹ C. The chloride solution may be concentrated using exhaust gases from the decomposition furnace (whereby HCl in the gases is condensed), and then decomposed in a fluidized bed of Fe oxide or in a spray tower in countercurrent to hot gases.
