Abstract

1406945 Recovering acid from pickle liquor OCEANIC PROCESS CORP 21 June 1973 [29 June 1972] 29576/73 Heading C1A Acid, e.g. HCl or H 2 SO 4 , is recovered from spent pickle liquor by (a) concentrating the liquor, (b) adding Fe 2 O 3 to partially neutralize the liquor to a pH of 1-2, (c) oxidizing, e.g. with a free O 2 -containing gas, the Fe<SP>2+</SP> in the concentrate into Fe<SP>3+</SP>, (d) separating the Fe 2 O 3 .- H 2 O precipitate and then (e) recovering the acid from the remaining soln. The recovery step (e) may be carried out by either (i) concentrating the soln. to precipitate FeCl 3 .6H 2 O which is then decomposed at 500-600‹ C. into Fe 2 O 3 and HCl, or (ii) spraying the soln. on to a fluidized bed of hot Fe 2 O 3 particles or into a heated chamber, thereby decomposing the ferric salt into Fe 2 O 3 and acid. The temp. of the fluidized bed or chamber is 500-600‹ C. and 500-700‹ C. for decomposing FeCl 3 and Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 respectively. The agglomerated Fe 2 O 3 from the fluidized bed may be either removed, reheated and recycled to the bed or used to partially neutralize the pickle liquor. The flue gases from the reheater may be used to concentrate the pickle liquor.
