Abstract
1,257,096. SO 2 removal and regeneration; H 2 S; COS. WESTVACO CORP. 28 July,. 1969 [13 Aug., 1968 (2)], No. 37854/69. Heading C1A. A carbonaceous adsorbent containing an adsorbate of SO 3 and H 2 SO 4 is regenerated in a process comprising treatment with an "oxidereducing gas" at a temperature sufficient to. reduce the adsorbate to SO 2 and/or elemental sulphur, and then removing the adsorbent. The "oxide-reducing gas" may be H 2 S or COS. The adsorbate is formed by passing a hot O 2 - containing gas stream (which also contains sulphur oxides) over the carbonaceous adsorbent at a temperature sufficient to adsorb the sulphur oxides; the SO 2 being oxidized to SO 3 , the carbon acting as catalyst; if any water is present the adsorbed SO 3 becomes H 2 SO 4 . Any sulphur on the adsorbent after the regeneration step may be removed by reaction with a "sulphurreducing gas" (e.g. H 2 , CO, or reformed natural gas). Preferred temperature ranges are: 250- 570‹ F. for the oxide-reduction; 200-260‹ F. for the adsorption of sulphur oxides; and 800- 1300‹ F. for the sulphur-reduction step. Preferably the adsorption step is carried out in a fluidized bed system; and the product (H 2 S or COS) from the sulphur-reduction step may be used in the oxide-reduction step.
