Abstract

Gas is treated to eliminate S vapour, droplets of liq. S and mixts. of H2S and SO2 contained in the gas in small amts., by bringing it into intimate contact with an acid aq. suspension of a finely divided catalytic material e.g. alumina or pref. active carbon. Catalytic material is then regenerated by (1) sepg. it from the aq. medium; (2) passing downwards through this material a fluid which can be either a liq. or a gas which does not react with the catalytic material, at a temp. sufficient to dissolve the S if the fluid is a liq., or to melt and volatilise it if the fluid is gaseous, and for sufficient time to separate the S from the catalyst. The regenerated catalytic material can then be re-used, in aq. suspension. Process is used partic. to treat gaseous effluent from the Claus process. The catalytic material can be regenerated so that it regains almost all its initial activity without appreciable loss of catalyst.
